Powers Painting and Decorating is committed to making our website usable for everyone, including people with disabilities. We want every visitor to be able to find the information they need, request an estimate, and learn about our services without running into barriers.
We’re a small, family-owned painting company based in Plainfield, IL. We don’t have a massive IT department, but we take this seriously. We’ve worked with our web team to build this site with accessibility in mind from the start, and we continue to make improvements as we learn more.
What We’re Working Toward
Our goal is to meet or exceed the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at the AA level. That’s the standard most widely recognized in the United States for website accessibility, and it’s what the Department of Justice references in its guidance on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
WCAG 2.1 AA covers four principles. A website should be perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust. In plain terms, that means people should be able to see or hear the content, navigate the site with different tools and devices, understand what’s on each page, and use the site reliably across browsers and assistive technologies.
Steps We’ve Taken
Here’s what we’ve done so far to make this site accessible:
Text and Readability We use clear fonts at readable sizes with strong color contrast between text and backgrounds. Body copy is written in plain, straightforward language without jargon.
Images All meaningful images on the site include descriptive alt text so screen readers can convey what’s shown. Decorative images are marked so they don’t clutter the reading experience.
Navigation The site is built with a logical heading structure (H1, H2, H3) so screen reader users can navigate by section. We’ve included skip-to-content links and ensured that all pages are navigable using a keyboard alone, without requiring a mouse.
Forms Our contact and estimate request forms use properly labeled fields so assistive technology can identify each input. Required fields are clearly marked, and error messages describe what needs to be corrected.
Color and Contrast We don’t rely on color alone to communicate information. Interactive elements like buttons and links are identifiable by more than just their color, and our color contrast ratios meet WCAG AA thresholds.
Responsive Design The site adapts to different screen sizes and devices, and content can be zoomed to 200% without losing functionality or readability.
What We’re Still Improving
We’re honest about the fact that accessibility is an ongoing process. There may be areas of the site that don’t yet fully meet WCAG 2.1 AA. Some things we’re aware of and actively working on:
